Model Overview

The SINOTRUK VGV U70 is a mid-size SUV introduced in 2019 by Weichai Power (subsequently rebranded as SINOTRUK VGV) and manufactured at Weichai Power's Chongqing plant. The model range underwent a rebranding exercise around 2021, having initially been marketed as the "Weichai Auto U70" before being consolidated under the SINOTRUK VGV nameplate. Positioned as a "creative and enjoyable large 7-seater SUV", the U70 highlights generous cabin space, versatile seating layouts, and strong value for money, primarily catering to two-child families, multi-generational households, and practicality-focused buyers.

The model line-up has evolved through several iterations including the 2021 U70, 2022 U70 Pro, and 2025 U70 Plus, with earlier mainstream variants priced roughly between RM77,900 and RM116,900. The 2025 VGV U70 Plus carries an official retail price ranging from RM97,800 to RM129,800, available in both 5-seater and 7-seater configurations. The vehicle is backed by an extensive 7-year or 150,000 km manufacturer warranty, underlining the brand's confidence in its build durability.

Design Language

The exterior styling of the U70 blends rugged off-road cues with utilitarian aesthetics. Up front, it features a prominent horizontal chrome radiator grille (with the Plus variant adopting a "mecha"-inspired dot-matrix grille), flanked by projector headlamps integrated with C-shaped LED daytime running lights (DRLs), projecting a solid and grounded presence. The 2025 U70 Plus adds circular front fog lamps that lend both a retro vibe and distinct character. Along the sides, sharp dual shoulder lines paired with a floating roof design impart a commanding visual stance reminiscent of a larger SUV. In terms of dimensions, the vehicle measures 4,825 mm long, 1,870 mm wide, and 1,700 mm tall, with a generous 2,800 mm wheelbase. The rear styling is neatly sculpted, featuring tail lamps linked by a broad chrome trim piece, while concealed exhaust tips provide a cleaner rear profile. Inside, the U70 comes standard with a dual-tone black and brown cabin; the dashboard is generously trimmed in soft leatherette and faux wood accents, complemented by a flat-bottom three-spoke multi-function steering wheel to foster a warm, family-friendly ambience.

Powertrain Performance

The powertrain setup marks one of the most substantial upgrades across the U70's lifecycle. The 2021 VGV U70 was powered by a TLE4G15D 1.5-litre multi-point injection turbocharged engine delivering 115 kW (around 156 PS) and 215 Nm of torque, paired with either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission on earlier models. For the 2025 VGV U70 Plus, the entire range has upgraded to Changan's new-generation Blue Core high-pressure direct-injection 1.5T engine (code JL473ZQ7), with output leaping significantly to 138 kW (around 188 PS) and 300 Nm of torque. Transmission options on the 2025 model include a 6-speed manual and a 7-speed wet dual-clutch transmission (DCT). Thanks to this powertrain revamp, throttle response from standstill and during low-speed acceleration is much livelier, with peak torque arriving as early as 1,500 rpm—resolving the power deficit experienced by earlier models at cruising speeds above 80 km/h. The entire line-up runs on RON 92 petrol, with a claimed WLTC combined fuel consumption of around 7.5 L/100 km.

Chassis and Handling

The U70 rides on a front-engine, front-wheel-drive (FWD) platform featuring front MacPherson struts and a rear torsion beam suspension setup. This configuration is standard fare among mid-size SUVs at this price point, primarily chosen for cost efficiency and interior packaging. The overall chassis setup is tuned for comfort, soaking up minor road vibrations reasonably well and keeping body composure stable over larger potholes. The electric power steering (EPS) is light and direct with minimal free play, ensuring effortless manoeuvrability well-suited for urban driving. Braking duties are handled by ventilated front discs and solid rear discs, delivering progressive pedal feedback. Given the vehicle's long body and tall ride height, rear occupants may notice some body roll during enthusiastic cornering, such as when navigating highway slip roads. Entry-level variants feature 17-inch or 18-inch wheels, while top-spec trims upgrade to 19-inch two-tone blade-style alloys wrapped in 235/50 R19 tyres, balancing road presence with grip.

Cabin and Equipment

Inside, the U70 features a standard 10.25-inch floating central touchscreen infotainment display, while the U70 Pro and higher grades add a 10.25-inch full-colour digital instrument cluster. The infotainment system supports smartphone screen mirroring (including Apple CarPlay and CarLife), Bluetooth audio streaming, and a reverse camera, with selected variants gaining 4G connected services and intelligent voice command for the sunroof, air conditioning, and navigation. On the comfort front, mid-to-high-spec models boast a 360-degree surround-view camera, smart powered tailgate, 6-way power-adjustable driver's seat, and heated front seats. Rear independent air-con vents, automatic climate control, and a panoramic sunroof come standard across the entire range. Cabin storage is well thought-out, offering ample cup holders and cubby spaces along the centre console and door pockets. The rear floor features a low transmission tunnel hump and is equipped with rear USB charging ports.

Safety and Driver Assistance

In terms of structural safety, the U70 employs an ultra-high-strength lightweight cage body structure, utilizing military-grade high-tensile boron steel in critical areas like the B-pillars. Dual front airbags and front side airbags are fitted as standard across the range, with higher trims adding full-length curtain airbags. Active safety kit includes ABS, Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist (BA/BAS), Traction Control (TCS), and Bosch Electronic Stability Programme (ESP) as standard across the board. Higher variants further benefit from Hill Descent Control (HDC) and Hill-start Assist Control (HAC). For driving aids, higher-spec models feature cruise control, though the range currently lacks Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) such as Adaptive Cruise Control and Lane Keep Assist. The 2025 model gains a side blind-spot camera and reverse camera, which prove genuinely handy for an SUV stretching over 4.8 metres.

Market Performance and Reception

The SINOTRUK VGV U70 adopts a clear value proposition—offering mid-size SUV cabin space at a compact SUV price point, positioning itself strategically against rival three-row SUVs like the Geely Haoyue L, Chery Tiggo 8, and Dongfeng Fengon 580. Sales records indicate that the VGV U70 registered 16,713 units in 2020, 7,521 units in 2021, and 2,662 units in 2024. Moving into 2025, sales volume declined further to sub-200-unit figures, recording just 164 units between January and November 2025. Owner feedback generally highlights the U70's core strengths as its segment-busting 2,800 mm wheelbase, versatile 7-seater packaging, and accessible price barrier. Conversely, lower brand equity, limited dealer network reach, sluggish performance from the early 1.5T engine under full passenger loads, and average ride compliance over rough surfaces remain the main criticisms from owners. Overall, the SINOTRUK VGV U70 carved out a niche with its "spacious, genuine 7-seater" persona in the RM100,000-class mid-size SUV segment, presenting a distinctive option for space-conscious family buyers. Nonetheless, weighed down by modest brand presence and the rapid onslaught of new energy vehicles (NEVs), its later sales volume has inevitably settled into niche territory.
